The Civil 20 working group for Gender Equality in collaboration with AYUDH organised a day of solidarity to call for women’s empowerment and an end to the struggles associated with disparity.
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore Campus hosted a remarkable day of events for the One Million Lights Campaign. The initiative for the Civil 20 Working Group on Gender Equality invites people to nominate individuals or organisations that have made a difference in their lives for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The event in Coimbatore was organised in collaboration with AYUDH, the youth wing of Mata Amritanandmayi Math. On the 30th of May 2023, the campus was honoured to have the presence of esteemed dignitaries who inaugurated and graced the event, and also lent their immense support to the cause.
The guests included Sri Satish Menon, Retired Air Commodore and Campus Director; Dr Sasangan Ramanathan, Dean of Engineering; Dr K Sankaran, Registrar of Amrita, Coimbatore; Dr. Nava Subramaniam, Dean of Business; and Br Gangadharamrita Chaitanya.
The event commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp followed by an inspiring introduction by Smt Sandhya Menon, Institutions Campaign coordinator (National Coordination Committee, AYUDH). She highlighted the objectives and significance of the One Million Lights Campaign.
Several captivating cultural performances were showcased during the event, including the Kolattam dance, Oyilattam dance, and a moving mime performance that addressed the struggles associated with gender disparities in our society.
The highlight of the event was the One Million Lights formation. Students, staff, and faculty assembled on the campus grounds, holding their mobiles aloft. The screens illuminated the area with the C20 logo, symbolising solidarity and support for gender equality. This visually stunning display left a lasting impact on everyone present.
Following this, Smt Menon led the attendees in taking a pledge on gender equality. The event concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all the dignitaries, participants, volunteers, and attendees who contributed to the success of the Million Lights Campaign. Their support and dedication were acknowledged as essential elements in raising awareness and fostering a more inclusive society.
