Youth Should Utilize the Full Potential of Science and Technology: Prof. Abhay Karandikar
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, one of India’s premier universities, celebrated its 21st convocation ceremony at the Coimbatore campus, marking a significant milestone in the lives of its graduates. The ceremony was graced by the presence of Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, as the chief guest.
In his keynote address, he threw light on the crucial role of science and technology in shaping the future, asking the youth to use their full potential in these fields. “Young entrepreneurs need to step forward more than ever. India is making significant strides on the global stage, and our youth must seize this opportunity,” he said. Prof. Abhay also spoke about the importance of aligning personal progress with the advancement of society and the nation.
Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, Chancellor of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, delivered an inspiring message via video during the ceremony. She stressed the importance of putting knowledge into practice and urged graduates to think beyond their personal needs to contribute to the betterment of the world. “The world has high expectations from you. Don’t miss the precious opportunities to apply what you have learned,” she advised.
Dr. S. Devarajan, Senior Vice President of TVS Motor Company (Bangalore), was a distinguished guest at the event. He spoke about the value of lifelong learning, encouraging graduates to remain observant and open to new ideas. “Life is all about continuous learning. Cultivating the habit of observing everything around us is essential, as it helps in shaping new ideas,” he said.
Swami Ramakrishnananda Puri, Treasurer and Trustee of Mata Amritanandamayi Math, presided over the ceremony and delivered the benedictory address. He reminded the graduates of the roles their families, society, and nature have played in their journey and urged them to never forget their indebtedness.
The ceremony was attended by key figures from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, including Dr. Sasangan Ramanathan, Dean of the School of Engineering; Dr. K. P. Soman, Dean of the School of Artificial Intelligence; Prof. C. Parameswaran, Principal Director of Corporate & Industry Relations; Dr. K. Sankaran, Registrar; Dr. Nava Subramaniam, Dean of the School of Business; and Campus Director Satish Menon.
A total of 2,040 students received their degrees from distinguished guests, spanning disciplines such as Engineering, Management, Arts & Science, and Agriculture. Among them, 729 were female students. Additionally, 30 PhD degrees were awarded. The B.Tech program saw 1,202 graduates, while 132 students earned M.Tech degrees, 186 students received MBA degrees, 369 students earned Arts and Science degrees, and 118 students received B.Sc. Agriculture degrees. Medals were awarded to campus-level toppers. This year, 94% of graduates from the Coimbatore campus have secured employment through campus placements.
