Live-in-Labs®, the experiential learning program at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, was showcased in Careers 360 Engineering Special Magazine, April 2018 issue. The theme of this feature, authored by Prof. Prashant R. Nair, Vice-Chairman, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore, was increasing employability through experiential learning programs such as Live-in-Labs®.
Today, Live-in-Labs® program is an integral component of the undergraduate engineering curriculum equivalent to an elective of 3 credits. More than 500+ Amrita students have participated in this program with the total hours of service exceeding 80,000+ hours.
“Amrita’s Live-in-Labs® program aims to expose the youth to the problems faces by rural communities in India, through experiential learning opportunities, in order to put theory into practice, by the generation of innovative solutions, and facilitation of critical and collaborative problem-solving abilities of the participants,” shared Dr. Sasangan Ramanathan, Dean, School of Engineering, Coimbatore.
In early 2013, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s Chancellor, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma), proposed a program, Live-in-Labs®, in which Amrita students and faculty members, in conjunction with students and faculty members from international universities could spend two weeks to six months in villages in India in order to understand current challenges and, subsequently, develop sustainable solutions. The Live-in-Labs® program was officially launched by Amrita’s Chancellor and the Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, University of California, San Diego on September 27, 2013.
