Amrita Live-in-Labs® is a multidisciplinary experiential learning program that facilitates the research, development, and deployment of sustainable solutions for current challenges faced by rural communities in India. The program is designed to engage participants in a mutual learning and sharing experience by breaking classroom and laboratory barriers to implement theoretical knowledge to address real world problems. The program allows participants to study, observe, and interact with rural populations while living in rural communities to gain a better understanding of challenges in the areas of Health & Livelihood, Education & Technology, Environment & Farming, Energy, and Infrastructure & Basic Facilities.
In Civil Engineering Department, the interested students will get an opportunity to work in any of the villages and solve the technical problems in areas like water and waste management, construction techniques, energy and environment etc. by applying the engineering knowledge they have acquired through their study. The students can identify the problem at the end of second year and start working on it. The evaluation will be in fifth semester and a satisfactory performance earns a 3 credits. Students earning this 3 credits have the option to drop one of the electives in semester VII.

The Civil Engineering Department of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and ASCE Student Chapter of FISAT together organised an Invited talk on the topic “Ecosystem Restoration” by Dr. Drissia T K, (Senior Scientist &TPA,ED’S Secretariat, Hydrology and Climatology Research Group) and Ms. Dawn Emil Sebastian (Scientist B, Kottayam Subcentre expert) on 5th June 2021 to celebrate Environmental Day. The talk was organized over Webex and had 135 participants during which speakers gave a detailed talk on the topics Regional Flood Frequency Analysis and Climate Change.
Civil Engineering Department of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham organized an invited talk on the topic” Opportunities after Engineering through Gate and ESE”. This interesting talk was done by Mr. Pradeep Raghu who is an Ace Academy Civil Faculty (Gate and ESE). Mr. Raghu gave us valuable insights about the options and opportunities that are available for engineers after their graduation and how to plan and go about them. This informative talk was conducted on April 23, 2021 through Zoom meeting. The number of people who participated in this event was 70.
Civil Engineering Department of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham organized an invited talk on the topic “BIM for Digital Building Design and Coordination”. Ms. Ema M.R who is the Founder and Principal Trainer of Ema’s BIM Academy talked about the above-mentioned topic in detail and explained the development of structures using BIM and its benefits. This talk was conducted through Microsoft Teams on April 19, 2021 with a participant attendance of 62.
Civil Engineering Department of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham organized a talk on the topic “High Strength Concrete”. This talk was handled by three speakers Dr. K. M. Mini (Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Civil Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering), Dr. Dhanya Sathyan (Assistant Professor (S.G), Department of Civil Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Er Akshay Nadiger (Assistant Engineering Manager, L&T Construction at Chennai. Er Akshay is also a Design coordinator at DRDO(Delhi). This talk was conducted through Microsoft Teams on March 13, 2021 and 70 participants were present for this talk. This talk provided new information about the material selection, mix design and application of high strength concrete
Civil Engineering Department of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham arranged a site visit for M. Tech. and B. Tech. Engineering students on March 9, 2021. 21 students visited the site which is located at Academic Block 2 Road, Ettimadai, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
Civil Engineering Department of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham arranged an invited talk in which Dr. Tribhuvan Pratap Singh who is an Assistant Professor at RICS SBE, Amity University, Noida spoke on the topic “Housing in India: Sustainable, Affordable and Resilient”, this session proved to be very fruitful for the participants as they were able to obtain knowledge on Real Estate in India and also the need for construction of houses in India that are safe, economical and sustainable. The meeting was conducted on GoToWebinar app on March 1, 2021 and a total of 51 participants attended this meeting.
Civil Engineering Department of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham organized Navratri Celebrations 2020 on November 29, where all Civil department students came together to participate and celebrate the auspicious day of Navratri with their cultural performances that includes playing instruments, singing and dancing.
Civil Engineering Department of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham organized an Invited Talk by Mr. Srikanth M who is a Data Analyst at Maxbyte Technology on the topic “Focus Not on Problems but on Potentials” to motivate the participants. This was organized through Microsoft Teams on 10th November 2020 with a total of 95 participants who were shown the way to work on their weaknesses while also developing their strengths to succeed in their goals.
Civil Engineering Department of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham arranged an Invited Talk by Mr. Raghul Asokkumar who is a Technical Consultant at ISKCON Coimbatore in Microsoft Teams on November 9, 2020 and spoke on the topic “Key to Success – Go Deep” to guide the participants in the path to attain success. A total of 96 individuals participated in the event and had their minds set clear on how to work towards their goals.
The ICI Student Chapter of Civil Engineering Department, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and ASCE Student Chapter of FISAT together organized an Invited talk on the topic “Supplementary materials for concrete” by Er. L S Kannan who is the JGM and Head of concrete management department at L&T constructions on November 5, 2020 to celebrate ASCE day. The talk was organized over Microsoft Teams and had 147 participants during which Mr. Kannan shared his experience and explained through live facts.
Civil Engineering Department of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham organized an Invited Talk on October 28, 2020 by Mr. M Murugu Elam Thendral (Technical head at TN ACC Limited) on the topic “Environmental Impacts of Cement and Concrete – Techniques to Optimization” to give insights into impact of cement and concrete production on the environment and different techniques for optimization. This invited talk was organized through Microsoft Teams and was attended by 82 individuals. It helped the individuals to gain a deeper understanding of Global climate disruption and atmospheric CO2 concentrations and also the three tools for reducing carbon emissions produced by cement industries.
In today’s scenario, the construction of a real building is much easier than getting approval for the construction and designing as per the standards. Even if all the things come together at the right time, the on-site construction process needs so of care from scheduling to maintenance of the labours. So a Civil Engineer should have a holistic understanding of the civil subject to life skills like Time management.
So with the help of department faculty, a club is formed under ACSE student chapter (incipient) for B.Tech students, where they will be doing the design as per IS standards and construct a miniature building model. In order to ensure the systematic working of the club, Progress of the club will be monitored and students will be guided by the faculty advisor of the club.

Totally 37 students have enrolled in this club (27 from 3rd year and 10 from 2nd year civil department). This 37 members have been grouped into 5 teams, each team consists of 7 to 8 members. Every week, each team will be given a task or work schedule and deadline for the completion of the work.
