Under the guidance of its Chancellor, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is dedicated to providing a range of facilities that support its faculty and enhance student well-being. Among these is the Amrita Daycare Center, which plays a crucial role in fostering an inclusive academic environment and contributes significantly to children’s development.
In rural South India, the campuses at Ettimadai-Coimbatore and Amritapuri have proactively provided crèches for employees, though most have found alternative childcare arrangements thanks to India’s multigenerational family setup, where grandparents often assist in caring for young children. At Amritapuri, many children are also looked after by caregivers at the nearby MA Math, conveniently located next to the university. Meanwhile, Bengaluru’s Amrita childcare center thrives, meeting the needs of urban working families. This facility is invaluable in supporting women faculty and students, enabling them to pursue their careers and studies while ensuring their children’s well-being, leading to better work-life balance, higher productivity, and increased retention rates.
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Bengaluru offers a secure and hygienic child daycare facility within the campus, catering to the children of working parents during daytime hours. This daycare was established in December 2006.
A dedicated facility has been constructed to better meet the needs of the children. The daycare operates on all working days from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It currently serves 6 children, ranging in age from 6 months to 9 years, and also provides after-school care for older kids.
The daycare is staffed by two well-trained female caretakers, ensuring ample supervision and individualized attention for each child. Health and safety are top priorities. The amenities include attached washrooms, designated rest areas with beds and pillows for each child, a cradle for the younger ones, a play area stocked with toys and other play materials. The facility also offers purified water, an oven, and a breastfeeding area. Older children enjoy outdoor activities such as ball games and various other games for one hour each day. Parents are welcome to make unscheduled visits and are encouraged to voice concerns and suggestions. The fact that kids are in a safe and clean facility inside the campus gives an immense sense of relief to working parents. This is evident from the testimonials from the parents.
” I am a PhD student studying in Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University, Bengaluru. I enrolled my daughter in her 9 years onwards and now it’s been one year. She is very happy and comfortable. I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for the outstanding care and nurturing environment in the creche. Even if I pick up my child in the late evening, the staff do not frown. I am consistently impressed by the professionalism and genuine care exhibited by the staff. I wholeheartedly recommend the creche to my fellow researchers.”

“My name is Navya JR, Amrita Bengaluru Department of ME. My first child is now 7 years old. He was taken care of by the university crèche from the age of 7 months. My second child is also now in the crèche. He is 1 year old. The two caretakers are very supportive and do a good job, all the facilities are provided by the institution. We feel at home and can leave our children there without any doubt or hesitation.”
In addition to providing essential infrastructure tailored to the needs of its students and faculty, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has been instrumental in raising global awareness about the importance of accessible creches to support working families.
As part of its role in Civil20, the official G20 Engagement Group for civil society, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham partnered with organizations like Mobile Creches, a pioneering NGO that has implemented diverse childcare models across worksites, urban slums, and tea gardens, engaging government, employers, communities, and NGOs.
To further this cause, we published a Thematic Report, featuring a policy recommendation from the National Forum for Creches and Childcare Services, advocating for universal access to full-day creches.
In this way, we ensure our practices are aligned with global standards and best practices for childcare accessibility.
