Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has made a transformative commitment to sustainability education by integrating comprehensive courses on sustainable development and climate action across all academic programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. This university-wide initiative aims to foster a sustainability-conscious mindset in students, equipping them to address pressing environmental and social challenges and empowering them to become advocates for sustainable change within their communities and beyond.
The mandatory courses will cover essential sustainability areas such as foundational courses in sustainable development, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) literacy, and applied sustainability. These courses address both current and emerging sustainability challenges, enabling students to develop a nuanced understanding of environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainability. Through these studies, Amrita students are encouraged to become responsible global citizens and future change-makers, equipped with the knowledge and skills to champion sustainability in their personal and professional lives.
These sustainability courses are embedded as mandatory credits within a designated semester across diverse disciplines, including Engineering, Social Sciences, Business, Biotechnology, and Medicine. To enrich this initiative further, Amrita has already incorporated sustainability modules within its Live-in-Labs® program—a unique, hands-on experiential learning platform that enables students to work directly with rural communities. Here, students apply their classroom knowledge in real-world contexts, collaboratively identifying sustainability challenges, co-designing interventions, and developing sustainable solutions that directly benefit the community.
Additionally, the Amrita School for Sustainable Futures has introduced core sustainability courses such as Conceptual Foundations of Sustainable Development and Perspectives on Sustainable Development that provides an essential theoretical foundation while guiding students to apply their knowledge in community-oriented projects. The curriculum across the School for Sustainable Futures increasingly reflects a commitment to sustainability, as all course syllabi are also oriented toward practical, community-focused applications of sustainable development principles.
Through this holistic approach, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is not only educating students on sustainability but also fostering a generation of leaders who are prepared to address and mitigate global challenges, ultimately contributing to a more resilient and sustainable future.
