This project focusses on social alliances (between social enterprises and for profit business enterprises), which could prove to be instrumental in driving social innovations. Such partners can potentially complement one another in the context of social innovation. Business enterprises bring their technical and commercial capabilities, while the social enterprises are typically resource constrained. The social enterprises who are well embedded in their local contexts have a better understanding of the opportunities for social innovation, have the trust and strong ties/networks with their local communities. Business enterprises lack such social capital and the associated local knowledge. Hence, together they can build capabilities through co-creation, which can drive social innovations that can yield both commercial and social value for the alliance and the society at large.

Dr. Smitha Nair is a Professor in Strategy & International Business at Amrita School of Business – Coimbatore. Previously she was a faculty member at Management School, The University of Sheffield (UK) and University of East Anglia (UK). Her research interests include cross border knowledge flows in multinationals, organizational innovation & internationalization patterns of emerging market firms. She has authored/co-authored book chapters and scholarly articles in leading journals like British Journal of Management, International Business Review, Management International Review, Journal of Business Research, European Journal of Marketing and International Journal of Management Reviews. Her education includes PhD in International Business & Strategy, University of Sheffield, UK; Master of Technology from Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay) and Bachelor of Technology from National Institute of Technology (Calicut).
