Utilising Geospatial Technologies for transforming the attitude of society
to perceive WATER as OURs rather than MINE
To make water sustainability a reality for communities across rural India, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s School for Sustainable Futures and UNESCO Chair on Experiential learning and ESRI, India jointly launched the initiative Mera Gaav, Hamara Jal ( “My Village, Our Water”). This initiative aims to bring in a transformational change to perceive WATER as OURs rather than MINE by transforming the attitude of society to view water as a community resource rather than as a personal resource. This is achieved by empowering community members, water-wise communities will be sprouted to achieve community-scale implementation of UN SDG 6 targets. The program acts as a Unified Monitoring and GIS data governance platform for water-related projects.
Through the Mera Gaav, Hamara Jal initiative, communities will be trained and empowered to map & monitor the resources, map water quality, practices prevalent in the community, livelihood activities, drainage mapping, weather variability, and climate impacts. This extensive crowd-sourced data will provide the opportunity to derive the water sustainability challenges in each of the communities. Along with this, it will equip the local administration, community organisations, and individuals to develop strategies for water conservation, optimise water usage, develop restoration of water resources, and build awareness of short and long-term impacts.
The data is collected through a crowd-sourced app called Empower Community App built by Amrita, which is used to monitor & track the progress of community members, Imparts online training & coordinates various development activities, and Enables daily reporting & virtual interactions. The data is visualised through ESRI’s ArcGIS Online platform tools: Web map and Dashboard.
