Departments of Amrita College of Nursing

 

The College of Nursing is structured into six major academic departments such as Foundations of Nursing, Child Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Medical Surgical Nursing, Mental Health Nursing and Obstetrics and Gynaecologic Nursing. Faculty in the Department of Nursing are committed to excellence in teaching, research and service learning. The nursing education emphasizes the importance of maintaining the highest professional standards in the care of patients. The departments function for an all-round development of the students through the balanced blend of curricular and extracurricular activities.

Medical Surgical Nursing

Medical Surgical Nursing is a broad specialty of nursing and it deals with the nursing care of patients with various medical surgical conditions. It forms a larger part of the B. Sc. Nursing curriculum. Subjects such as Pharmacology and Pathology are coupled with the basis of medical and surgical nursing to enrich the scientific knowledge of the students.

The faculty of the department imparts in depth knowledge to the students by various innovative teaching methods. Methods like seminars, symposiums, group discussions, care studies, care analysis, case presentations and procedure demonstrations are used to enhance the knowledge and skills of the students.

As part of the clinical experience in Medical Surgical Nursing students are posted in various medical surgical ward, intensive care units., operation theatres and speciality areas like Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Oncology, eye , ENT Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Oncology units.

The nursing process approach is used to provide nursing care to patients by which the students assess the client problems, formulate the nursing diagnoses and objectives, plan and implement nursing care, and evaluate the effectiveness of care.

At the postgraduate level, Medical Surgical Nursing offers various sub-specialties like Cardiovascular & Thoracic Nursing, Neuro Science Nursing, Nephro Urology Nursing, and Oncology Nursing.

It is designed to assist students in developing expertise and in depth knowledge in the field of medical Surgical Nursing and to function as a specialized Medical – Surgical Nurse in various sub specialitits. It will further enable the student to function as educator, manager and researcher in the field of Medical – Surgical Nursing.

Area of Research: Adult and Geriatric Nursing Care

The Department of Medical Surgical Nursing covers a broad area of research under adult and geriatric nursing care. Presently the Department is involved in research in areas like nursing care of cardiothoracic, onclology, neurology and neuro surgery and nephro urological clients, use of alternative and complementary therapies, evaluation of specific nursing interventions etc.

Obstetrics and Gynaecologic Nursing

Obstetric and Gynaecological Nursing focus on the care of women during the child bearing years. The scope of practice includes reproductive child health, care during pregnancy, labour and puerperium including condution of normal deliveries, family welfare, and care of women with gynecological problems.The course in obstetric and gynecologic nursing prepare the students with the knowledge, skill and attitude to function as nurse midwives. The theory and practical learning experience provided in the subject equip them to provide comprehensive care to the normal and high risk mothers during antenatal, intranatal and postnatal period including the care of newborns.

The students are given clinical experience in the antenatal and postnatal wards, out patient departments, labour room, gynec operation theatre, and gynec wards under the guidance of specialized faculty.The postgraduate programme assist students to develop expertise and in-depth understanding in the field of Obstetric and Gynaecological Nursing. It will help students to appreciate the client as a holistic individual and develop skill to function as an independent midwife practitioner. It will further enable the student to function as educator, manager, and researcher in the field of Obstetric and Gynaecological nursing.

Area of Research: Reproductive & Women’s Health Care

The Department of Obstetric and Gynecologic Nursing is involved in research studies in the area of reproductive & women’s health care, development of a child birth preparation program specific to the need in our society.

As a part of this project a series of studies are carried out in the department which include perceptions of child birth among postnatal women, effectiveness of a prenatal education on knowledge, self efficacy and practices of breast feeding, effectiveness of child birth education on child birth experiences of women, awareness regarding preconception care among women of reproductive age group, effect of L14 acupressure on perception of labour pain, assessment of preparedness and perception of child birth with a view to develop a child birth preparation programme for antenatal mothers, knowledge regarding selected minor ailments of pregnancy among antenatal mothers, and Breast feeding Self efficacy and Breast feeding practice among postnatal women. Research on menopausal problems, Reproductive health and menstruation related problem are also carried out in the department.

Child Health Nursing

 

Child Health Nursing is a speciality which focus on nursing care of children, both normal and sick.The objective of the course is to prepare students to identify the normal growth and development of children and deviation from the normal, give comprehensive nursing care to children suffering from various diseases.Special emphasis is given to Embryology, Genetics, Psychology, Paediatric medicine, Surgery, Nutrition, and Growth and Development. Child Health Nursing is paced in the third year of the BSc Nursing Curriculum.

Inorder to enhanse the knowledge and skill of the students are given clinical experience in pediatric medical and surgical wards apart from theory classes. The students also have the privilege of becoming familiar with the most sophisticated equipment and technology related to client care, especially in our Paediatric Cardiology, Paediatric Cardiac Surgery Units, Paediatric Neurology, Gastroenterology and Adolescent Medicine.

Amrita College of Nursing offers postgraduation in Child Health Nursing which prepares the students to develop expertise and indepth understanding in the field of Pediatric Nursing. It will help students to appreciate the child as a holistic individual and develop skill to function as neonatal and pediatric nurse specialist.

It will further enable the student to function as educator, manager, and researcher in the field of Paediatric Nursing.

Area of Research: Preventive Paediatrics, Nursing Care of Children

The Department is involved in research areas such as life style diseases, nutrition and health, life style, behavioral problems of children, effectiveness of a teaching programme on various problems, neonatal jaundice, pain among infants, development of nursing care protocol , play therapy, quality of life of children with health problems.

Community Health Nursing

Community Health Nursing is the specialty that prepares the students to meet the ever changing challenges of society.The course orients the students to the concept of positive health and successful living and focuses on the families in the community and population groups with health risks.

The students identify and solve health problems in the community through innovative and cost effective strategies of primary health care.

The practical experience is provided in settings like the Amrita Community Health Training Centre (Njarakkal), Amrita Urban Health Centre (Kaloor), and in the adopted villages of  Njarakkal Panchayat in collaboration with the Department of Community Medicine.

This experience includes opportunities for participation in various National Health Programmes  and an array of guided observation visits to various locations of public health importance.The Department regularly organizes household surveys, epidemiological  investigations, health projects, mass campaigns, home visits, health care programs, school health programs, special clinics, etc. in the adopted villages.

The awareness campaigns, exhibitions, and health education activities organized in the villages train the students to effectively interact with the community on health topics. Thus, this department is acting as the campus-community link of the college.

Area of Research: Promotive & Preventive Health Care, Lifestyle Diseases

The department of Community Health Nursing is involved in research in the areas like Geriatric care, Community mental health, Substance abuse, School health, Occupational health etc.

Mental Health Nursing

Mental Health Nursing is designed for developing an understanding of modern concepts of mental health, mental illness, principles of mental health nursing and for making the student  function effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary mental health team.

The Mental Health Nursing Department organizes programs aimed at enabling the students to identify the  mental health needs and problems of their clients and to acquire skill in providing comprehensive health care to them, applying preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative aspects  of mental health care and the principles of mental health nursing.

This is achieved by the expert guidance of the psychiatric nursing faculty and other members of the mental health team including Psychiatrists, Clinical psychologists, Psychiatric  social workers, etc.

The students receive clinical experience in mental health centres. Their clinical experience is enriched from observational visits to various facilities including  psychiatric rehabilitation centres, residential care facilities, special schools for the mentally retarded, and children with physical and psychological disabilities, de-addiction centres,  orphanages and old age homes.

The department also offers counselling services for students having psychological and adjustment problems.

Area of Research: Mental Health Needs & Problems of People Across Lifespan

Faculty of Department of Mental Health Nursing are enthusiastic in conducting research studies on various aspects of mental health problems of child, adolescent, adult and elderly. Research areas are focused on substance abuse, psycho social interventions, geriatric care, childhood behavioral problems, mood disorders and organic mental disorders.

Foundations of Nursing

Foundations of Nursing is the corner stone of nursing science and it is the underlying basis for rendering basic need based holistic nursing care to the sick and healthy individual, family or community.  This department equips the novice nurse with the necessary knowledge, attitude and skills to practice nursing in an effective manner.

The Department of Foundations of Nursing was established on 2016.  There is adequate infrastructure for teaching, learning, and research activities at the department. We provide a 1872sqft. pre-clinical laboratory area for demonstrating basic nursing procedures and 568 sqft lab area for advanced nursing procedures. The pre-clinical lab area is equipped with mannequins, equipment, and instruments to successfully incorporate classroom teaching into clinical care. Faculty members in this department are highly experienced and have a passion for teaching and research.

Foundations of Nursing is a major subject taught in First Semester B.Sc Nursing and the clinical services are provided in medical, surgical, orthopaedic, cardiac and other general wards of Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences.

Mental Health Nursing
