Final year BDS students from Amrita School of Dentistry – Rohan Vaidya, Kanika Khubchandani, Shanmugapriya Ganesan and Anju Treesa John presented papers of original research work at the IDA Kerala State Students Conference 2018 held at Trivandrum on November 24, 2018. Kanika Khubchandani (Final year BDS Part 1) received the best paper award for the study on “Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Biomedical Waste Management among clinical dental students”. All other papers were well appreciated by the jury. The students were guided by Dr. Sravan Kumar, Dr. R. Venkitachalam, Dr. Joe Joseph and Dr. Vijay Kumar – faculty members, Public Health Dentistry.
Dr. Parvathy Vijay, 3rd Year Postgraduate, Department of Pediatric Dentistry won the ‘Best Paper presentation award’ for the topic ‘Hemisection: Concealing tooth aplasia’ at the 40th National Conference of the Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry in October 2018.
In connection with the Infection Control Week 2018, a poster competition was organized on October 15, 2018 among the schools in the Health Sciences Campus, Kochi. Students of the 2016 and 2017 batch of MDS from the Department of Periodontics, Amrita School of Dentistry, bagged the 2nd and 3rd prize respectively in the poster competition. The theme for the poster presentation was “Protect Patients Everywhere.”

Around 100 dental undergrduate and postgraduate students presented posters at the symposium. Anjana presented a poster on “Medico-legal issues in Dentistry” which was selected as the Best Poster in the undergraduate student category.

This award instituted by the Indian Society for Dental Research (ISDR) and the Indian Association for Dental Research (IADR), Chennai, is given to the dental undergraduate student(s) securing the top mark in various subjects of the Final Year BDS course. Dr. Chandrashekar Janakiram, Professor, Public Health Dentistry, Amrita School of Dentistry is awarded the Research Scholar Fellowship for Public Health Informatics at National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), National Institute of Health (NIH) USA for one year starting from July 2017 to June 2018. It is for the first time they have awarded this prestigious postdoctoral fellowship for a non-USA applicant.
The fellowship training include health services research, surveillance, disease prevention, and health promotion with an emphasis on incorporating “Big Data” or data analytics concepts and skills, such as text mining, named entity recognition, image analysis or health records analysis, and clinical research informatics. Topics in clinical informatics could include capture, processing, and analysis of clinical data for patient care and research and the development of health informatics resources.

Her topic of presentation was “The Role Orthodontists In Diagnosis and Management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.” Dr. Maria John Kuriakose, Professor, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, also presented a paper on “Maxillary Protraction in Cleft – Benefit / Burden.”

At the 12th Annual State Conference of AOMSI (Kerala Chapter) held at Palakkad during October 09 – 11, 2015, Dr. Ravi Veeraraghavan, Professor and Head, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was invited as a keynote speaker to talk on “Current concepts in the management of Keratocystic Odontogenic Tumors.” Dr. Arjun Krishnadas (CMFS fellow) won second prize for his scientific poster titled “Alloplastic Total TM Joint Reconstruction: A Case Report.”

Dr. Arun M. Xavier, Reader in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Amrita School of Dentistry won the best paper award in the 37th Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry conference (ISPPD) held at Raipur during October 08 -10, 2015. The paper was titled, ‘Preventive dentistry through a community based programme – A need of the hour’. This is the fourth consecutive year in a series Dr. Arun is winning the title for the ‘best paper presentation’ in a national conference. He was previously awarded at the national conferences held at Mangalore, Jaipur and Lucknow in the years 2012, 2013, 2014. He was recently announced a classified winner (2nd prize) for the Bright Smiles Bright Futures award at the 25th Congress of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry, Glasgow, Scotland (July 1 – 4, 2015).

Prof. Dr. Balagopal Varma, Principal and Head, Pediatric Dentistry, Amrita School of Dentistry gave an oral presentation on the ‘Importance of comprehensive dental treatment & health education in Down Syndrome’ at the 25th Congress of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry (IAPD) held at Glasgow, Scotland, from July 1st to 4th 2015.
His session was chaired by Prof. (Dr) Terry Gregg (UK) and Prof. (Dr) Roger Hall (Australia), authorities in Orofacial Medicine.
Dr. Arun Mamachan Xavier, Reader, Pediatric Dentistry, Amrita School of Dentistry was shortlisted from a large number of entries in the world to the last 4 finalists to compete for the ‘Bright Smiles Bright Futures Award’ in recognition of an innovative community oral health education program that motivates children and improves oral health habits at the 25th Congress of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry (IAPD) held at Glasgow, Scotland, from July 1st to 4th 2015.
He was announced as the Classified Winner (Second Prize) and won a certificate of Excellence, a cheque of 500 US dollars and a flower bouquet.
His paper was titled, ‘My Mama Cares for Me – A Proactive Dental Home Initiative’ co-authored by Dr. Radhamani K. (Professor & Head of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences) and Dr. Parvathy Sreekumar (PG Resident, Pediatric Dentistry, Amrita School of Dentistry).
Dr. Arun Mamachan Xavier also gave a poster presentation on the topic, ‘Effect of carbonated beverages on aesthetic restorative materials – an in-vitro surface microhardness study’ at the congress.

Rajan, Assistant Professor, Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, was invited to conduct a one-day workshop on “Basic Concepts of Endodontics” as part of the Sri Lanka Dental Association Eastern Regional Conference during April 25 – 26, 2015, in Batticaloa. He also delivered the keynote address titled “Endodontics today and tomorrow”, and a guest lecture on “Recent Advances in Endodontics”.
