About the Department

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is the river of knowledge with Her Holiness Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi as its fount. This river finds its course across five campuses, with 15 schools of excellence, offering more than 120 degree programs (Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral) with a strong contingent of 1500 faculty and 13,000 students. Amrita, at present stands as a multi-disciplinary institution in the real sense with path-breaking research in the areas of Engineering, Medicine, Management and Communication. Recently stepped in area of Agriculture Sciences with the mission of offering value-based education in letter and spirit, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham designs the courses of study that are continuously reviewed and updated, keeping abreast with the advancements in the field. The Management is committed to creating and sustaining an ambience that is most conducive to learning and nurturing youth who are intellectually competent and socially committed.

Contrary to the conventional teaching and research in the field of agriculture sciences, In Amrita, students get advanced training in the field of agriculture science through integrating technological advancements. The curriculum is designed through a multidisciplinary approach aligned with international standards and as envisaged by Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Expertise available at the national and international level will be involved in all spheres of the programme.

The “Fifth Dean Committee Report” of the Indian Council of Agriculture Research prioritised industry participation through the introduction of “Agro-Industrial Attachment Programme” in the curriculum to enhance entrepreneurial skills of students and to align agricultural research and education with industrial demand and to ensure wider applicability of the research findings. Corporate and Industry Relations Centre of the Amrita Viswa Vidyapeetham has always been in the forefront with dedicated efforts to support students with industry-linked research projects and to ensure their placement with the industry. Agriculture being the backbone of the country, Amrita Viswa Vidyapeetham is quite keen to train its graduates under a high-quality industrial environment to enhance their skills and to develop them as potential leaders capable of making interventions and innovations in the agroindustry sector.

Conventional agriculture education and research often lack a multidisciplinary approach especially through the integration of technology. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham being pioneers in technology, including nanotechnology, biotechnology and sensor-based applications is already in the forefront through developing various need based devices and methodologies for the community. Our “Living Lab Programmes” offer immense opportunity to students to be part of research and developmental activities by utilising our world class researchers and laboratories. We are quite keen to train our agriculture students by exposing them to a versatile research and academic environment to build them as next generation researchers/managers capable to make meaningful interventions in the field of agricultural sciences.

The new agriculture curriculum of the Indian Council of Agriculture Research involves “Agro-Industrial Attachment Programme” in line with Start-up India, Skill India and Digital India. Amrita Technology Business Incubator, being the best TBI of the country has always been in the lead with dedicated efforts to extend research findings to industry, leading to a wider applicability. Agriculture being the major economic activity of the country, Amrita Viswa Vidyapeetham is quite keen to link economically viable ventures with industry through its TBI platform. In that way, students and researchers get ample opportunity to involve in agriculture research and education aligned with industrial needs leading to extensive opportunities.
