Abstract : Smart metering was introduced as part of automating the grid, where the meters automatically send the meter readings to the central utility. Unlike the existing system of GSM based single hopping transmission that involves huge traffic and costs, a meter-to-meter multi hopping data transmission network is proposed here. The selection of communication technology in smart meter network is very crucial. In this paper, a smart meter network with random topology is taken and, based on the literature survey and taking the advantages into account, ZigBee is selected for home-to-home network and also for communication between data collecting node and central station. Analysis of the selected network is done based on the performance metrics like throughput, delay, packet delivery ratio and number of repeater nodes. The multi hopping smart meter network is implemented in hardware and received data is made accessible in the system via GUI.
