Abstract : The concept of Flexible AC Transmission System is made possible by the application of high power electronic devices for power flow control in transmission line. Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator controls the power flow in transmission lines by varying the impedance of TCSC by controlling the delay angle of thyristors. This paper presents a conceptual study on the working of TCSC to observe the variation in transmission line reactance with change in the triggering angle of the thyristors using Simulink in MATLAB. The control circuit for each thyristor is designed in MATLAB to generate the requisite gate pulses. The TCSC module is designed for operation in capacitive mode and the variation in net reactance by changing the triggering angle (α) is determined and tabulated. The region of operation is from 130° to 180° where the reactance of the TCSC was observed to be reducing with increase in α. © Research India Publications.
