Abstract : 14 patients (aged 20–70 yrs) diagnosed as having tardive dyskinesia (TD) by 2 psychiatrists independently in a psychiatric outpatient clinic of a general hospital were followed up for periods varying from 10 to 21 mo. Assessments were done using an abbreviated dyskinesia scale developed by G. M. Simpson et al (1978). Results show that patients having severe TD did not show any major change in rating except for 1 who showed an increase in severity. It is concluded that there is no association between TD and amount of antipsychotics received by patients, maintenance dosage of antipsychotics, and history of discontinuations in therapy. It is suggested that unknown constitutional factors have a more important role to play in the genesis of TD. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
