Abstract : In the present study, a-C films were deposited on medical-grade 316 LVM stainless steel using PLD technique with Ti, Cr, and Ni interlayers to study the morphology and corrosion behavior of the composite films. The structural make-up of the films was evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The sp2 and sp3 content of the films were obtained through Raman spectroscopy. Further, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was performed to evaluate the corrosion behavior of the composite films. The XRD results showed the formation of carbides with Ti and Cr interlayers. What is more, the Raman data showed higher sp3 content in the a-C/Ni composite film whereas the FWHM value was less in the case of a-C/Ti and a-C/Cr films ascribed to lower disorder and defects in the composite films. The potentiodynamic curve and Nyquist plot suggest better corrosion resistance in the a-C/Cr film due to higher corrosion potential (Ecorr= -1.74 V) and lower corrosion current density (Icorr= -0.33 mA) owing to passivation in the film.
