Abstract : This paper proposes a method for controlling the speed of DC motor using FPGA. It deals with the hardware implementation of Proportional-Integral (PI) controller using FPGA for speed control of separately excited DC motor. The controller is embedded in FPGA using VHSIC (Very High Speed Integrated Circuit) Hardware Description Language to implement speed control loop. The controller design, synthesis and analysis are carried out by using XILINX ISE software. FPGA based PI controller design is advantageous due to its high speed, complex functionality and lower power consumption compared to microprocessor based control algorithm systems. The hardware implementation has been done on a XILINX Virtex4 FPGA chip. Experimental setup consists of a 0.75KW separately excited DC motor, Virtex4 FPGA chip, DC-DC chopper and an optical encoder for speed measurement.
