Abstract : India, the world’s one of the leading automobile markets is still lagging in adopting new technologies in mobility. India has one of the lowest EV penetration rates in the world. The lack of charging infrastructure is one of the main reasons for this lag. Especially in rural India, investments in charging infrastructure are less. Thus, rural India is still not confident to accept electric mobility. In this paper, a universal smart charging outlet which can charge every electric vehicle is proposed; it has smart grid compatibility to change the tariff structure. This Smart device is associated with a web application which will display the consumption of energy by the vehicle which can be accessed from a remote location. A hardware model is implemented using Arduino UNO as the controller. The proposed smart charging outlet will help in making hotels, restaurants, cinema theatres, and other shopping areas of rural India EV-friendly. A network of these devices will boost India’s EV penetration rate. The hardware prototype is successfully tested using different categories of electric vehicles. The energy consumption and charging time for different electric vehicles are obtained using the web application of the smart device.
