Abstract : Smart meter network supports various smart grid applications like demand response, dynamic pricing, time based tariff, etc., and so numerous messages flow through this network. Routing protocols are necessary for the efficient delivery of such messages and effective implementation of these applications. This paper discusses the scope of message routing in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and studies the possibility of using wireless sensor network routing protocols in AMI. The metrics that decide the selection of routing protocols for a futuristic AMI scenario are brought out and also analysed. The performances of routing protocols like AODV, DSR, DSDV and AOMDV are compared based on selected metrics in a futuristic AMI scenario through simulation in ns2.
