Abstract : Nowadays Marine industry is using fossil fuel for the operation of cargo ships. Presently, in various marine vessels due to the use of fossil fuels, the emissions of greenhouse gases in the environment are increasing rapidly. To reduce the emissions, this work presents a hybrid-electric propulsion system that uses hybrid fuels namely diesel and gas. These hybrid fuels can be used to cater the power to different types of loads in ships namely bow thruster, propeller, and hotel loads. A study has been carried out on how these loads are connected in a ship during its operation at different times using MATLAB/SIMULINK. This work also presents an alternative way of reducing the consumption of fossil fuel by using renewable energy with a proper switching mechanism. Ocean wave energy will be used as renewable energy which is an environmentally friendly and available abundantly at free of cost. A switching mechanism is developed by replacing a turbogenerator with a permanent magnet linear generator; this generator converts the ocean wave energy to electrical energy. Modeling of a linear generator is also done in this project using MATLAB/SIMULINK.
