Abstract : Congestion management in power systems is in one of the major challenges faced by the power system operator. Increase in demand without the addition of new transmission lines leads to congestion in the transmission lines. The power system operator must take appropriate steps needed to reduce the congestion in the power system without which power system security will be compromised. Utilising the existing transmission lines to the maximum possible extent and generation rescheduling are the most important options available to the power system operator working in the central centre. A coordinated control of generator scheduling and series compensators is one of the possible solutions to this issue. An attempt to develop a coordinated control algorithm using generation rescheduling and line reactance control to eliminate congestion in an “n” bus system is made in this paper. This control algorithm is applied to a 5 bus system and IEEE 14 bus system under different overloading conditions and the effectiveness of the control algorithm is verified. The developed coordinated control algorithm successfully removes the congestion in the transmission lines. This algorithm increases the line loadability as series capacitor compensation is considered in this algorithm.
