Abstract : In recent years, both the research and industrial communities have shown a significant amount of interest in biopolymers made from renewable resources. Due to the wide range of applications they offer in sensors, biodegradable composites have grown in popularity. They can replace the current non-bidegradable sensors since they are conductive, biocompatible, affordable, and environmentally benign. As an alternative to conventional materials, composites and nanostructured materials based on biopolymers are widely employed in a variety of sensors, including optical sensors, electrochemical sensors, and humidity sensors. Due to simple and affordable manufacturing techniques, biopolymeric sensors have been at the centre of current research programmes for the design, development, and use of sensors. According to data and reports, we are at a new phase of biomaterial development where biopolymer-based nanocomposites in general, as well as such a forward-thinking biomaterial, may be used to create sensors that are biocompatible, sensitive, and selective. The relevance of biopolymer composites and current advancements in biopolymer-based chemical sensors are briefly discussed in this chapter, which provides a broad introduction to biopolymers.
