Abstract : As an independent animal activist, the author shares her ability to leverage her background in journalism to help her address critical questions related to the notorious Kerala Street dog killings in India. In this chapter, she shares reflections as a participant observer on the social construction of dogs and the role of the media. Through her lived experiences, she explores, for instance, how storytelling in the mainstream media helped foster empathy toward community dogs who were otherwise despised due to the fear of dog bites and rabies transmission. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Lori R.
