Abstract : In this paper a 3D stress analysis on the human femur is carried out with a view of understanding the stress and strain distributions coming into picture during normal day to day activities of a normal human being. This work was based on the third generation standard femur CAD model being provided by Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute. By locating salient geometric features on the CAD model with the VHP (Visible Human Project) femur model, material properties at four crucial locations were calculated and assigned to the current model and carried out a nonlinear analysis using a general purpose finite element software ABAQUS. Simulation of Marten’s study revealed that the highest stress formed in the absence of the cancellous tissue is almost double the value of stress formed with cancellous tissue. A comparative study was made with the Lotz’s model by taking into consideration two different sections near the head and neck of the femur. An exhaustive number of finite element analyses were carried out on the femur model, to simulate the actual scenario.
