Abstract : This paper presents the design, development and simulation studies of a model predictive current controlled grid connected PV inverter. The cost function for the Model Predictive Controller is formulated with the objective of current tracking by inverter to transfer maximum power from the PV panel. A dc-dc converter stage is preceding the inverter to perform Pamp;O power tracking for the PV panel. The inverter control takes care of the dc link voltage so as to generate the reference for its inner current loop. The entire system is designed for a power rating of 15kW and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink platform under various irradiance conditions. The predicted current is in good agreement with the reference current generated under all conditions. The THD of the injected current is found to be well within the maximum limits. The power balance between the panel and the inverter output is verified for various conditions.
