Abstract : Reductive cleavage ofbenzylidene acetals using a modified low-valent titanium species results in thestereoselective formation of (E)-stilbenes [cf. (III), (VI)] and arylalkanes (II).Aliphatic acetals such as (Vb) remain unaffected under similar conditions.Hence, this reaction offers an indirect protocol for the stereoselective synthesisof stilbenes in a modified McMurry pathway.
