Abstract : A pothole is a unique type of road hazard. It poses a serious threat to human life. In specific, the pothole has an adverse effect in extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain and snowfall and creates a significant impact on vehicular traffic and road impairment. And due to this endeavor, people lose their lives on roads. Based on the above issues, a robust pothole detection algorithm is proposed to detect the pothole and cracks in the road surfaces. In this algorithm, Otsu’s thresholding and mathematical morphology technique are applied to efficiently detect the road cracks and potholes. Further, a simple affordable system is designed and established in a movable vehicle with an IoT device which connects to the server. This system conveys the detected potholes and cracks to the drivers. Also, the location and the images of the damaged roads are collected with the help of WIFI and GPS module and complaints are registered simultaneously to the highways department to improve the road safety. As compared to the existing systems, the proposed algorithm is computationally efficient and has improved accuracy. Also, the developed prototype suits the real-time scenario with better detection results.
