Abstract : Demand response is emerging as a powerful tool for optimal load management in smart grid environment. This work aims to improve the efficiency of demand response by classifying them into three based on the supply-demand characteristics as natural DR, mandatory DR and emergency DR. The master controller acts as the backbone of the network generating the required demand response signals and receiving the response of the end users by establishing a two way communication between master controller and end users. The devised methodology for optimal demand response is simulated in MATLAB/ Simulink taking into consideration a network of four houses, each with their smart meter and managed by a master controller. Simulation incorporated the functions of Home Energy Management System (HEMS), which is a major feature of the Smart Grid along with demand response
