Abstract : High blood pressure is the most prevailing cardiovascular risk factor worldwide. Recent report indicated that nearly one billion adults had hypertension in 2000, and this is predicted to increase to 1.56 billion by 2025. Conventional antihypertensive drugs are usually associated with many side effects. Research has found a variety of alternative therapies to be successful in reducing high blood pressure including ayurveda, homeopathy and acupuncture. About 75 to 80% of the world population use herbal medicines, mainly in developing countries of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) are common. This review article gives an idea about the various treatment options and pharmacoeconomics of hypertension under alternative system of medicine.
