Abstract : Thermally sprayed abradable coatings are employed in gas turbine engines in order to achieve optimum clearance between the shroud and the blade tips. A novel test rig called the clearance control test rig (CCR) has been recently set up at DMRL in order to closely simulate the rubbing interaction between the blade tips and the shroud. In the present study abradable performance of Al-Si polyester and BN-cermet abradable coatings have been evaluated at different incursion speeds at ambient conditions using the CCR. The results show that the abradable mechanisms for both these coatings are clearly distinct and the incursion speed plays an important role in their abradable mechanism. Substrates: Ti-6Al-4V (Al-Si polyester) and In718 (BN-cermet).
