Abstract : The performance of a LED highly depends on its ability to dissipate heat and maintain ideal temperature. The heat produced must be dissipated as much as possible to increase its performance and to have a longer life. Fins with perforations have been tried out to check the enhancement of heat transfer rate. Addition of perforations reduces the material requirement and weight of the LED housing which would allow better flow of air that will increase the convective heat transfer rate. Real life 50W LED housing has been chosen, modelled utilizing Catia V5 and analysis is made with the help of Ansys to obtain the preliminary results. The optimal heat transfer rate, by varying number of fins, number of perforations per fin and diameter of each perforation is obtained using Genetic Algorithm. The optimal model showed significant increase in heat transfer rate by 32.67% higher compared to the real model design. Optimal values of the three critical parameters i.e., number of fins, number of perforations and diameter of each perforation are found to be 30, 150 per fin and 1.3 mm respectively.
