Abstract : Trending problem in today's scenario is heavy loaded lines. Power flow in the transmission line can be controlled by using FACTS devices which varies the line reactance and voltage. Series compensating devices such as Thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC) and Thyristor controlled reactor (TCR) are used to control the line reactance. In general, TCSC is designed based on the percentage of compensation which compensates only a limited range of power flow. In this paper, a single TCSC with wide range of compensation is achieved based on the transformation ratio. The characteristics of modified TCSC and its impact on Surge Impedance Loading (SIL) and Stability are analyzed.
