Abstract : Challenges of the time include growing energy demand, increasing environmental pollution and depleting non-renewable resources and it is these reasons which encourages the introduction of renewable energy into the grid system. In this paper, a hierarchical model supervisory energy management system has been proposed, which is responsible for the power balancing between the distributed energy resources (DER) incorporating PV, battery and AC grid, taking into consideration the load demand, grid supply and injection limits and various system constraints like battery SOC, PV power and irradiance level. The supervisory system also provides the provision for smart grid communication between the utility and load center, thereby ensuring efficient management of the grid system. The simulation works carried out in Matlab/Simulink platform validates the concept of energy management system.
