Abstract : Transformers are expensive equipment in the power system. Determination of life of transformer is very important as damages in a transformer cause long interruption of power supply. The life of a transformer is determined by the life of the insulation which in turn is assessed by the maximum temperature rise inside the transformer. The factors which affect the transformer life include harmonics, faults, surges, poor design, lack of regular maintenance etc. In this paper, simulations are done to determine the harmonic pollution caused by computer loads and lamp loads. Soft computing techniques are also used to determine the winding temperature of the distribution transformer installed in a harmonic polluting environment. © 2010 IEEE.
