Abstract : With the emergence of optical communication networks, a high performance demultiplexer design plays significant role in designing an efficient optical networks. Wide bandwidth with compact dimensions, greater light restriction capability, and many other advantages are made possible by photonic crystals. Thus, a four-channel demultiplexer is designed and simulated in this article using a two-dimensional photonic crystal square ring resonator (RR), making it suitable for dense wavelength division multiplexing application. As the ring resonator (RR) is the crucial structure to design the proposed demultiplexer for a flexible optical devices. To design a demultiplexer, silicon dielectric rods with a refractive index of 3.37 and a wavelength of 1.55 μm have been proposed. The simulation for the proposed designs is performed using finite difference time domain method and the analysis reveals the quality factor (Q factor) of approximately 7820.89, with an average transmission efficiency of 95.73% and average crosstalk of − 18 dB to − 45 dB. At narrow channel spacing from 0.8 nm to 1.6 nm, the proposed device footprint was 196.69μm2 and the devices response time was measured in picoseconds. Hence this structure having enhanced features provides high performance and wide bandwidth features which can be used in future integrated circuits suitable for optical networks.
