Abstract : Phasor Measurement Units are now an integral part of electrical networks due to their excellence in monitoring and control. PMU s are devices that measure positive sequence values of both voltage and current at connected nodes, along with time synchronization. PMU data can be useful for detecting topology variation, state estimation, fault analysis, and much more. However, due to the increased cost of these devices, it is nearly impossible to install PMU at all nodes. Researchers have proposed various algorithms for the optimum placement of PMU s in electrical networks. In this paper, a comparative analysis of the major algorithms for PMU placement in distribution networks is performed in terms of their performance, parameters, and cost.
