Abstract : This paper deals with communication architecture employing appropriate communication technologies for distribution side Wide Area Measurement System. The different communication technologies like WiredLAN, WLAN, ZigBee protocol are simulated in ns2 considering a 5-bus smart micro-grid topology and the performance metrics are compared and analysed based on the standard requirements in order to suggest the apt technology. The study shows that in comparison with a homogeneous network, a heterogeneous network provides a better result considering the operational demands at different levels of the smart distribution grid architecture.
