Abstract : Compounds which impart colour is usually referred to as dyes. Based on the difference in the structure they are classified into apocyanines, cyanines, hemicyanines, etc. Owing to the numerous applications in the field of medicine, science and technology, cyanine dyes occupy an indispensable position among dyes and pigments. They are put to use in various ways - as synthetic drugs, photoreceptors, cell growth inhibitors, fluorescent sensors, photorefractive materials etc. Considerable amount of work has been carried out based on the syntheses and applications of cyanine dyes. This review throws light on the structure and classification of cyanine dyes along with its syntheses, aggregation properties and applications.
