Abstract : Use of renewable energy sources in India is growing at a faster pace. There is also a paradigm shift from conventional to renewable sources in energy sector. Out of the 180 million rural households in the country, nearly 43 percent still use kerosene as the primary fuel for lighting. Kerosene-based lighting devices are not a desirable option for several reasons such as poor quality of light, risks of indoor fire hazards and health issues etc. Solar lantern is a better alternative in terms of quality of illumination, durability and versatility of use. In this paper, we attempt to study the applications of solar lanterns in different areas of the society and their advantages over other traditional sources of lighting.
