Abstract : The telecommunications industry has witnessed a revolution with the invention of optical fibers. Fiber optic communication provides transmission of data over long distances at a higher data rate than that of conventional copper cables. It offers low attenuation and interference thereby expanding the scope of its applications. With the introduction of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG), optical sensing has gained immense popularity and has overcome many challenges associated with electrical sensing. Each optical channel has the capability of housing dozens of FBG sensors thereby reducing the complexity of the system. This paper mainly discusses about the temperature effects on the fiber properties which results in the shift of reflection spectrum. This principle is being used in low and high temperature fiber optic sensors.
