Abstract : Control systems designed to monitor processes are referred as Data Acquisition Systems. If the system also has the provision of remote control to function based upon the acquired data, it is referred to as SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition System). Modern SCADA provides proper monitoring of equipment to maintain operations at optimal level by identifying and correcting problems before they turn into significant system failures. Microcontrollers, with their small size and modules like the A/D converters, Serial Ports, I2C built into their hardware platform provides an efficient solution towards building small, low cost industrial environmental compliant devices. Low power consumption make them perfect solutions for Industrial Control and other applications. Thus, usage of Embedded Microcontroller as the brain of the Remote Telemetry Unit (RTU) of a SCADA system which will be custom built for applications will make the system less complex and cost effective. The RTUs can be networked through widely used standard protocol like RS 485 physical layer and Modbus Standards which will save further cost and make the system simple for installation and maintenance. The aim of project would be to design a miniature SCADA customized to monitor the production of the various physically separated machines in a typical shop floor of a Manufacturing Industry. This would enable the organization for Quick Response Managementand Control of the problems.
