Abstract : The development of advanced technology requires massive storage of images and low transmission cost. This scenario triggers the necessity of image compression. Especially, real-time medical applications demand robust compression methods for transmitting valuable and sensitive information in less time without losing their quality. The basic process of compression lies in eliminating the redundant and irrelevant information from the original data. Fractal coding is a popular technique which achieves compression by creating self-similarity pattern or dimension using different scales. In this chapter, vector quantization process is applied to form the self-similarity dimensions under fractal method. Differential method is used to improve the quality of compressed image. The results have proved the efficiency of the proposed method in terms of higher PSNR and compression ratio. This research work could be an ideal choice for telemedicine applications.
