Abstract : The effectiveness of various activating agents in improving the properties of porous carbon derived from various sources is investigated in detail. Morphological parameters such as surface area, pore size and porosity, and surface characteristics play a key role in rendering the activated carbon with ultimate properties to meet the specific demands of applications. Even though physical activation is eco-friendly, use of various chemicals for activation produces an interesting combination of very high surface area and meso/micro porosity. Current studies confirm the use of activating agents for doping carbon. In this relation, H3PO4 is used to produce phosphorous-doped porous carbon, which is quite extensively used in hydrogen storage devices while ZnCl2 can be used to produce Zn-doped activated carbon.
