Abstract : In this paper, we propose a novel fault location scheme for transmission lines equipped with thyristor-controlled series compensators (TCSCs). The proposed method combines the FWHT and the GPR techniques to estimate the fault distance accurately. The FWHT is used to transform the measured current and voltage signals into the frequency domain, while GPR is used to model the relationship between the fault distance and the transformed signals. The proposed scheme has been tested using simulation studies, and the results show that it can accurately locate the fault distance for different fault types and fault locations, even in the presence of TCSCs. The proposed scheme can also handle noise and measurement errors effectively. The proposed FWHT-GPR based fault location scheme can be used as a reliable tool for the protection of TCSC-compensated transmission lines.
