This study employs a state-transition Markov microsimulation model to estimate the disease and economic burden of tobacco use in India, differentiating between combustible and smokeless tobacco consumption. Using nationally representative data and validated modelling techniques, it quantifies the health impacts, direct medical costs, productivity losses, and societal burdens associated with tobacco-related illnesses, including cardiovascular diseases, respiratory conditions, and multiple cancers. The model also assesses the potential benefits of tobacco taxation by estimating reductions in tobacco consumption, improvements in public health outcomes, and economic savings over a decade.
