IoT Framework for Modeling, Monitoring and Damage Detection of Natural and Historical Heritage Structures

Natural and historical heritage needs to be monitored and maintained to conserve the common culture and heritage, and to bestow it safely to the future generations. The objective of this project is to design an IoT platform for monitoring the health of natural and historical heritage structures. This platform will include modules capable to perform sensor fusion, direct and inverse modeling of structures, decision support system for damage detection, visualization and alert dissemination to provide real-time health status of the structures.

This project is as part of the Indo-Italian Executive Programme of Cooperation in Scientific & Technological Cooperation. The collaborating partner is University of Roma Tre, Rome, Italy, which has a very good background about direct and inverse modeling of structures and damage detection. Our University looks into the design and implementation of the framework for large-scale data collection, big data analysis, and warnings.

Project Investigators:

  • Dr. Stefano Gabriele, Assistant Professor of Structural Mechanics University “Roma Tre” of Rome, LaMS – Modeling and Simulation Lab. @ Dep. of Architecture Argiletum, Rome, Italy
  • Prof. Balaji Hariharan, Associate Professor, Amrita Center for Wireless Networks and Applications, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus

Co-Investigator:

  • Dr. Maneesha Ramesh, Professor & Director, Amrita Center for Wireless Networks and Applications, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus

Researcher:

  • Indukala PK, Research Associate/PhD scholar, Amrita Center for Wireless Networks and Applications, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus

Indian Researcher Visit to Italy:

Indukala has been involved in the research development of effective signal processing techniques for Heritage Health Monitoring. She participated in the Italian experimental campaign conducted by University of Roma Tre, Italy and National Civil Protection, Department of Italy. She also attended training sessions on the real-time data collection from accelerometer sensor signals, and their analysis, for the Structural Health Monitoring of Heritage School Buildings in Rome and got an immense opportunity to work with the government officials from National Civil Protection, Department of Italy.
