Hybrid Energy storage system (HESS) for Smartgrids and Electric vehicles

Renewable energy sources are getting importance due to the concern of environmental pollution and depletion of fossil fuels. The fluctuation in output of renewable sources are the main drawback which is rectified with energy storage units. The HESS consists of two types of storage devices having different energy density and power density which are two main requirement of a storage systems for most of its applications in Grid as well as Microgrid. Storage options for Microgrids may vary with respect to the type of Generation, type of load etc. Different types of Microgrids which differ in types of sources and loads with energy storage devices are considered here and controlled in grid connected as well as independent modes. In this work, the focus is on the charging and discharging of storage devices with respect to the source and load conditions and also power quality improvement and active and reactive power support. The application and management of hybrid energy storage systems in heavy duty Electric vehicles is explored in this research work. This research has collaborations with AIT Thailand and another collaboration for a project with West Virginia University, USA. It also has a patent filed.

Research Progress

  • Effectiveness of hybrid energy storage system is analysed in Smartgrid.
  • Simulation and hardware results are verified
  • Electric vehicle modeling and HESS power management is done, and the efficiency of the energy management algorithm is validated using simulation results.
