The Nanobiotechnology programme is focused on biomedical nanotechnology, wherein students explore the advanced applications in the biomedical area. Such applications include new implant technologies, regenerative engineering, new nanomedicines to combat cancer and drug resistance, targeted medicines for treatment with reduced side effects, diagnostic technologies using nanomaterials etc. The course covers in-depth nanomaterials and their properties, nanosystems design, the physics and chemistry of nanomaterials and applications of nanotechnology to the biomedical area, including engineering of scaffolds and the engineering of devices at the nanoscale for diagnostics and treatments. The program also offers clinical exposure in one of the many operation theatres of the hospital to help students develop an understanding of the medical applications of nanotechnology. This is a pioneering program that aims to develop an all-round scientist and technologist with interdisciplinary specialization in three areas– nanotechnology, biotechnology and medical sciences.
The two-year M.Tech program focusing on Nanobiotechnology, is designed for students to explore in-depth, the processing of nanomaterials suitable for biomaterial applications and the development of drug delivery systems, tissue engineered devices, and diagnostic tools for diseases detection. Applications include new implant technologies, regenerative engineering, new nanomedicines to combat cancer and drug resistance, targeted medicines for treatment with reduced side effects and diagnostic technologies such as applications of nano-enhanced laser diagnostics and therapies for cancer screening. The research school is a Thematic Unit of Excellence under the Nanomission program of the Government of India. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to pursue their Ph.D dissertation at Amrita School of Nanosciences & Molecular Medicine. ASNSMM has a full-fledged placement cell that assists students in developing competencies and employability skills in order to become part of top-tier companies.

Nanobiotechnology is an interdisciplinary field combining principles of nanotechnology and biotechnology to create innovative solutions for various healthcare, agriculture, environmental remediation, and more applications. It involves designing, synthesizing, characterizing, and applying nanomaterials and nanodevices for biological and biomedical purposes.
Nanobiotechnology has diverse applications, including targeted drug delivery, biosensing, tissue engineering, molecular imaging, cancer therapy, environmental monitoring, and agricultural biotechnology. Nanomaterials and nanodevices enable precise manipulation and interaction with biological systems at the molecular and cellular levels, leading to novel solutions for healthcare and other fields.
Prerequisites typically include a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, nanotechnology, or a related field. Students should have a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, and mathematics and an understanding of nanomaterials and their applications. Proficiency in laboratory techniques and analytical skills is also beneficial.
Graduates of M.Tech in Nanobiotechnology have diverse career opportunities in research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, nanotechnology companies, government agencies, and academia. They can work as nanobiotechnologists, research scientists, product development specialists, regulatory affairs managers, or pursue doctoral studies for advanced research or teaching positions.
The curriculum typically includes Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications, Biomolecular Engineering, Nanobiotechnology Techniques, Nanotoxicology and Safety Assessment, Biomedical Imaging, Bioinformatics, and Regulatory Aspects of Nanobiotechnology. Students can also engage in hands-on projects and research in nanobiotechnology laboratories.
