The XIX International Conference on Public Policy & Management, hosted by the Centre for Public Policy (CPP) at IIM Bangalore, was held from 27 to 29 August 2024. This prestigious event successfully gathered scholars, practitioners, and students to discuss various public policy issues. The conference featured academic sessions, policy debates, workshops, and panel discussions, providing a vibrant platform for exchanging innovative ideas and showcasing the latest research in public policy. The interdisciplinary nature of the event highlighted the critical role of diverse perspectives in addressing contemporary policy challenges.
The 2024 conference focused on several key themes, including Emerging Technologies and Policy Implications; Policies on Climate Change and Sustainability in Industry and Agriculture; Policy Challenges in the Gig and Platform Economy; and Innovations in Public Policy. The event kicked off on 26 August 2024 with the Prof. M. R. Krishnamurthy Memorial Lecture, delivered by Prof. Ashish Verma from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), on ‘Understanding and Harnessing Linkages between Sustainable Transport and Livability for Building Brand Bengaluru’.
The conference’s official opening on 27th August featured an inaugural address by Mr. Suman Bery, Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog, on the topic “Reaping India’s Demographic Dividend.” Plenary sessions, led by experts such as Parameswaran Iyer of the World Bank, tackled significant issues like the challenges of implementing public policies. Other sessions covered a diverse array of topics, from the policy implications of emerging technologies to the integration of AI in governance and the development of sustainable practices in industry and agriculture. The conference also addressed policy challenges in the gig economy and discussed social security frameworks for gig workers.
The conference included a significant collaboration with the Young Scholars Initiative (YSI) South Asia Working Group, which hosted a pre-conference workshop and poster session. This partnership provided an opportunity for 20 selected scholars to present their work, fostering academic engagement and networking among young researchers.
Professors from Amrita School of Business presented in Track 1 of the XIX International Conference on Public Policy & Management held on 28th August 2024 which focused on Mr. Suman K. Bery, Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog talking on ‘Reaping India’s Demographic Dividend’ c “Emerging Technologies in Governance: Perspectives and Policy Implications.” This session explored various aspects of digital transformation in public governance through cases written by various case writers under the eGOVMMCASES Project, funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The session featured a range of presentations demonstrating the application of digital technologies in enhancing government services and improving public administration efficiency. One notable presentation, “From Pixels to Progress: A Case Study on Digital India” by Prof. Monica Singhania from the University of Delhi, discussed the broader implications of the Digital India initiative in transforming public service delivery.
Other significant presentations included “Jeevan Pramaan: The Digital Solution for Annual Life Certificate for Pensioners,” presented by Prof. Raghu Raman, Prof. Ramana Acharyulu, and Prof. Vinith Kumar Nair from Amrita School of Business, which showcased a secure, paperless solution i..e Digital Life Certificates for pension verification. Additionally, the “Parivahan Seva Portal,” presented by Prof. Ramana Acharyulu, and Prof. Vinith Kumar Nair from Amrita School of Business, illustrated the use of digital platforms to streamline transportation regulation services.
Finally, the “Income Tax Service Portal” case study by Prof. Pushpender Kumar, Mr. K Ranga Rao, Prof. Ramana Acharyulu, and Prof. Vinith Kumar Nair highlighted the portal’s role in simplifying taxrelated services for citizens, reflecting the broader objective of enhancing transparency and accountability in governance through digital means. These cases underscored the critical role of digital innovation in driving effective governance and delivering citizen-centric services. The case presentations were well received and Prof. Rahul De, Professor of Information Systems at IIM Bangalore was the session chair of the track
