The department of Nephrology at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi observed “World Kidney Day 2015” on March 12, 2015. World Kidney Day is celebrated worldwide, bringing together millions of people over 150 countries, uniting them to produce a powerful voice for kidney health awareness.
This year’s theme was “Kidney Health for All” and the program was planned to benefit all sections of the society. A health checkup and awareness camp was conducted by the Department of Nephrology at the District Collectorate, Ernakulam which was inaugurated by the Honorable Assistant Collector, Smt. Mrunmayi Joshi. Awareness lectures were delivered by doctors at the Department of Nephrology viz., Dr. George Kurian, Professor and Head; Dr. Rajesh R. Nair, Professor; and Dr. Anil Mathew, Associate Professor.
Proteinuria detection camps were conducted at primary health centers located at Cheranellore, Kalamassery, Edapally and Thrikkakara. Nearly one thousand people were screened for proteinuria on a single day and several thousands of pamphlets on kidney disease awareness were distributed at various parts of the city.
Awareness was spread through FM Radio and TV Channels in the form of question answer sessions and awareness lectures. Furthermore, Dr. George Kurian delivered a lecture on “Update on Diabetic Nephropathy” at a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program organized by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Kalamassery in connection with the World Kidney Day.
