As a part of the Vidyanveshane series, a workshop on Positive Journalism and Writing Skills for Print Media was conducted on October 24, 2017, for the students of the Department of Visual Communication, School of Arts and Sciences of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Mysuru Campus. The session was handled by Mr. S. S. Mahadevan, Former Editor of The New Indian Express and India Today.
The session began with an introduction to journalistic writing, idioms and phrases used in magazine writing, the need for precise writing for news media and writing for broadcast media. A lot of samples from the media were displayed for a better understanding and also to kindle the thought process of the students. Writing exercises and review sessions were conducted as a hands-on activity.
The workshop was arranged to break the myth that ‘Anything bad is good news!’. Mr. Mahadevan said that ‘the world is blessed with positive happenings which rarely get covered by the news media.’ The ethics involved in the journalistic profession was also emphasized. The students were sensitized to social needs and concerns and the need for a positive attitude in reporting was emphasized.
